We started with the group 28 and moved up from there. We didn't do any stops and finished with a smaller group that was a mix from several others. Congrats for finishing at 5 hours!

Re: Tour de Helsinki

Good effort! I came in at a couple of minutes over 5 hrs - and ache plenty today - so 20 minutes is a great effort! :-) Did you know at the start which food stops your peleton was going to stop at? Neither myself not the guy I was riding with speak much Finnish so we didn't really get that. We did about the first 50 or 60 kms in the 32 kmph quite happily, but then Simon wanted to grab some food at one of the stops so we lost that peleton and rode too much in small groups trying to catch up to the bigger groups and really having to put lots of effort in. Finally got caught by the 28 km group about 3 kms out from the finish and came in with them - you live and learn though! Well done again, it was a great day riding with so many other cyclists.

Re: Thomas Friendman thinks like Finland. It's doing all you can do see results. I remember when I studied these issues and read through the G8 memos. Believe me, it's politics all the way and fair is very far from it. So even the best of us need to understand the stakes and the Two-level Game the statesmen need to play: When the decision makers come back home from summits, be it EU or WTO, the decisions need to be acceptable not only in the international arena, but also (and perhaps especially) in the domestic arena.

And sometimes (if we're lucky) people like Lewis can tip the domestic public to pressure the administration to make decisions acceptable that would otherwise never get passed due to “economic chauvinism”.

Re: Critical juncture

(I was curious what was the connection between putting money where the mouth is and this post. maybe investing in cleantech? :-) anyway I derailed you from that :-)

yes, your are right. creating awareness is just a start. from what I noticed (elsewhere), you need critical mass no matter how "good" your hand is.

but then, you would need the critical mass acting in the "good" direction. Lewis' 1st point was to reduce emissions in all big "polluters", but that's not quite fair: if X country is mass-polluting since 1880, they should "eat" the biggest pie of the cut, not spread it equally to all who might have came late (1980?) to the party

it's like mining Africa for people (err, slaves) and natural resources for hundred of years, then capping the emissions in Africa to XX% of the current ones.

but that politics already :-)

(lots of the TED talks are pure gold and the best ones show the problem and the solution to it)
The point I tried to make was not necessarily what you're talking about tho.

I was trying to say (and apparently failed) that this video captures the sentiment I'm increasingly seeing and sensing, just as most of us do, I suspect. My point was that the delivery and expression of what we see in mediums like TED, Al Gore films etc. seem to stick. The actual issues at hand are more serious and plenty that one talk let alone blog post do justice for, but regardless of which one of the pressing global issues we choose, I'm happy we have found a way to bring the Invisible Victims (to use economics jargon) to life, even if the awareness starts with just a fuzzy feeling. And I agree with you that it very often does just that. But that's a start.

Influencing people to act starts by creating awareness to which you need their attention. This is one way to do that, through a compelling audiovisual story. Say what you will, but I felt inspired and full of positive energy after watching this.

Re: Critical juncture

this coverage only scratches the surface, the real problems are deeply rooted in the society (starting with tuition, accepting the differences (between humans), helping others, etc)

education and eradicating poverty worldwide should be the main drivers (cutting emissions and whatever the bankers /btw: investec got about as much coverage as his whole speech/ are pushing for will create some fuzzy feelings in the West, but the East / Far East and other remote places will still experience the same level of support (=none)

district 9 (the movie) tells pretty much were we are today as "humans"
